There's No Excuse for Domestic Violence

Welcome to the Citrus & Cane Blog! We are so happy that you are here. At our very core, we wish for this to be a fun, safe, and creative space for us to engage and learn from one another. We welcome each one of you to always hold us accountable and reach out to us with any concerns or questions. As much as we love providing affordable, unique accessories, we love giving back to our community even more. We have partnered with one of our local non-profits, the Penelope House, in an effort to help them continue providing their amazing services to the people in our area. If you are not an Alabama native, you may not be familiar with the Penelope House and the need it fulfills. 

Penelope House is an organization that helps victims of domestic violence who are in imminent danger. They provide victims with a safe place to stay while regaining their independence through counseling and referrals to community resources. That in of itself is an incredible undertaking, but they do so much more. There is a hotline that is available 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Through this hotline, you can receive concealing and referral services for someone you may know that is in an abusive relationship. The shelter is also open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, in which domestic violence victims have access to transportation, food, clothing, and support in multiple facets. Penelope House helps to advocate for the victims in legal circumstances as well. In the midst of a very trying time, knowing there is someone who can support and provide guidance when navigating the court system can be a huge relief. There are also support groups and Children’s programs that are accessible to those within the shelter as well as those from an outreach standpoint. 

In addition, Penelope House works to prevent intimate violence through education. This includes grades Pre-K through 12th. I personally find this to be such an awesome service this organization provides. Through the educational program, children learn about how to recognize behavior in adults that are inappropriate, ways to deal with stress, how to keep themselves safe during violent situations, and who they can confide in when they are in such circumstances. If we as a community, are able to provide these tools and support to children, we have a chance to create a healthier life for not only those children but our society as a whole.
