Plantable Candle Dust Covers
In our latest blog, we chatted about Ditching the Lids on our candles so that we could move forward with a totally sustainable product. To replace the lids we used to use on our hand-poured scented candles, we made beautiful dust covers to protect the top of the wax from sun damage, dust, and other debris that could fall inside the candle! Allow us to introduce to you our recycled seeded dust covers that you can literally plant in the ground. We are so excited about these and can't wait to see the wildflowers you grow.
Our environmentally friendly recycled seeded paper is handmade in Nepal by rural craftsmen. This paper used for our dust covers is made from 50% recycled materials and contains raw materials of Daphne bush. The Daphne bush is farmed and harvested from 4-year-old plants that are cut down and stripped of their bark. Because the plant regenerates from the root, this stripping of the bark does not destroy the Daphne bush. Once the bark is removed, the remaining stick is used to heat the villager's homes and provide fuel for cooking and paper production which also uses recycled and reused water. The bark is beaten by hand and boiled to break it down to a pulp that is then poured into screens to form the sheets. Once the sheets have been poured, they are then left to dry in the sun. The entire process of making this recycled seeded paper is earth-friendly and provides a booming enterprise for the local Nepali community.
Our recycled seeded paper is compostable as well as plantable! Embedded within each sheet of paper are hundreds of tiny wildflower seeds which will happily grow in North America! In this paper, you'll find 10 annual and perennial species which will tolerate partial shade, need 4 hours of direct sunlight, and grow to about 3 feet tall! Please keep in mind that these germinating species and seedlings cannot survive any kind of drought and will need to be watered daily to keep the soil moist. If you plant your paper in a pot or garden, only cover with 1/8" of soil and keep moist until seedlings are established.
Some seeds will begin to grow in as little as one week while others can take up to six weeks! It's important to be patient with your seedlings and ensure their necessary growing conditions are maintained. Under proper conditions, your paper will sprout beautiful wildflowers in your pot or local garden. Because we cannot control the conditions where you are growing your wildflowers, we cannot guarantee growth, but we can assure you that with proper care you will have a healthy garden of flowers!
Some of the seeds within the paper are teeny tiny, meaning they're nearly impossible to see! Your paper has an abundance of wildflowers in it including Snapdragon, Petunia, Beardtongue, Daisy, Thyme, Poppy, Foxglove, Catchfly, Maiden Pinks, and even Chamomile! This paper has been vigorously tested by the USDA and Nepali Department of Agriculture.
We hope you love these new seeded paper dust covers we'll be using as candle lids! Moving forward, all new candles will include these as we transition from back-stocked candles that already had their original lids available. Have any questions?
